Eastern Floater (Pyganodon cataracta)

 Description -Shell: 150 mm long, 75 mm high and 65 mm wide
-Periostracum*: shiny and grass-green, or modified with yellow or brown, or simply brown all over
-Nacre**: silvery or white, tinged with blue or yellow, and iridescent
 Distribution -Lower St. Lawrence River drainage and Maritime Provinces south in the Atlantic drainage to the Gulf of Mexico drainage
 Ecology -Ponds, lakes, and streams of various widths down to small brooks
-Most abundant in mud but also occurs on sand and, less frequently, on gravel
