The Petitcodiac River Declaration

The Petitcodiac Riverkeeper unveiled a Declaration on May 4, 2000 to have the governments restore full tidal flow of the river by 2004. The Declaration, presented in English, French and Mi'kmag reads as follows:

We, the people who value the Petitcodiac River watershed and estuary, determined to save present and succeeding generations from inheriting a legacy of environmental, social and economic loss brought about by the Petitcodiac River causeway, to reaffirm the rights of all individuals and communities in the Petitcodiac River watershed and Shepody Bay estuary to a healthy environment, to clean water, clean air, access to and enjoyment of this great river system and estuary, which enrich our lives with social, recreational, cultural, economic and spiritual values and benefits. Have resolved to combine our efforts to achieve these aims: the restoration of the Petitcodiac River watershed and estuary to ecological health and its presence at the heart of our collective identity, the restoration of full tidal movement through the Petitcodiac River causeway by replacing a portion of its structure by a bridge span, the full recovery of the Petitcodiac River estuary and Tidal Bore, the restoration of fish habitat in the river system, and the protection of Shepody Bay's migratory bird sanctuaries and rich feeding grounds. To these aims we pledge our commitment and our support, for as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the rivers flow.
