Building a Partial Bridge on the Petitcodiac is about...
1. Creating Canada's most extensive
river restoration projects to date, restoring the severely
restricted Petitcodiac River channel to most of its pre-causeway
width within a period of several years. The massive silt deposits
in the Petitcodiac River created by the causeway will be returned
into tidal suspension, restoring channel depth in the river as
well as in the headpond. Natural navigation conditions occurring
in the Bay of Fundy coastal areas will be re-established in the
Petitcodiac River, based on a 12 hour and 25 minute tidal cycle,
restoring the region's natural link to the Fundy tides.
2. Creating Canada's largest
estuary restoration projects to date by opening up 21
km of upstream Petitcodiac River sections to natural tidal flow.
For the first time in over 30 years, the chocolate coloured waters
of the Petitcodiac River will be able to reach their historical
tidal range near the Village of Salisbury, 54 km from the mouth
of the Petitcodiac River. Freshwater from the upper tributaries
of the Petitcodiac River system will flow downstream unimpeded,
re-establishing the important nutrient exchange functions necessary
to maintain a healthy Inner Bay of Fundy ecosystem.
3. Re-establishing Canada's most
renowned tidal bore phenomenon by restoring this natural
attraction to most of its original glory within a period of several
years, creating a world-class natural attraction and generating
significant socio-economic benefits for the region.
4. Creating one of Canada's most
important fish habitat restoration projects to date by
re-establishing anadramous fish passage to over 1,450 km2 of upstream
river system.
5. The restoration of the Petitcodiac
River ecosystem and its tidal bore is expected to set an important
environmental precedent and generate national and international
attention, creating environmental goodwill for this region
and for Canada.
