Project Assessment Branch - Petitcodiac
River Causeway Project
c/o Serge Gagnon, Project Manager
Department of the Environment & Local Government
P.O. Box 6000,
Fredericton, NB
E3B 5H1
Dear Mr. Gagnon,
I am writing to voice my support for the Environmental Impact
Assessment on the Petitcodiac River and its recommendations to
restore full tidal flow to the river. This 4-year process marked
the first time independent experts laid out the effects of the
causeway for the public, providing evidence that the causeway
had decimated fish populations in the river, impacted the Tidal
Bore and clogged the river with silt.
A careful analysis of fishways worldwide also revealed that there
is no man-made system in the world that will effectively restore
access to the Petitcodiac spawning grounds. The EIA study further
concluded that only opening the causeway permanently, or replacing
the causeway with a partial bridge would restore the “unimpeded
and safe movement, upstream and downstream, of fish between aquatic
habitats required to complete their life cycle.”
The mandate of the EIA was focused and
the entire process was transparent and based on science. I urge
you to accept the recommendations as presented in the EIA’s
Final Report. I also agree with Petitcodiac Riverkeeper’s
recommendation to select an option that will restore the river
to its maximum potential, and urge the Province of New Brunswick
and the federal government to do the same.
Sincerely,
