Stream Clean-ups Scheduled for September 22nd

(Moncton - September 20, 2001) - Dozens of volunteers will head to the streams of the Petitcodiac River watershed this coming Saturday morning to take part in the bi-annual stream clean up program sponsored by the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper and funded by the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund.

« Humphreys Brook in Lewisville, Fox Creek in Dieppe and Smith Brook in Memramcook will be thoroughly sweeped in order to rid the streams of all the garbage we can find », said Daniel LeBlanc, Petitcodiac Riverkeeper. The Riverkeeper obtained $16 000 in order to organize the clean-up event. The money comes from the Province of New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund.

Every year, the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper organises groups of volunteers to clean-up the rivers and brooks of the watershed, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. Last year, groups of volunteers worked on a number of streams including North River, where over 10 metric tones of debris was found and removed. The volunteers also did some work along Seamans Brook in Lewisville, the Anagance in Petitcodiac, Mill Creek in Riverview and Smith Brook in Memramcook.

Anyone interested in taking part in the clean-up is asked to go to one of the three meeting points this Saturday: at the corner of Mills and Martin Road in Moncton for the clean-up of Humphreys Brook, at the Rotary Park in Saint-Anselme for the clean-up of Fox Creek, and on Sifroi Road (former Woodstock Road) in Memramcook for the clean-up of Smith Brook. A lunch will be served to volunteers at noon. The activities will take place rain or shine.
