Downtown River Run
Canoe-kayaks will be on the Petitcodiac River this Sunday
(Moncton – September
13, 2005) – Petitcodiac Riverkeeper is organizing a river
run on the downtown portion of the Petitcodiac River this Sunday
September 18th. The excursion aims to promote awareness of the
enormous recreational potential associated with this unique tidal
river and to reconnect members of the community with their maritime
heritage.
The Downtown River Run is
part of a new project to promote the unique recreational values
of the Petitcodiac tidal River, sponsored by the Mountain Equipment
Co-op Environmental Fund. MEC’s environmental programs aim
to help preserve the quality of Canada’s natural environment
and to educate the public and its members on environmentally responsible
outdoor adventures.
“Tidal rivers are
fun and unique”, says Riverkeeper Daniel LeBlanc, “and
these types of activities help us better understand how the restoration
of our river will bring positive environmental, socio-economic
and recreational benefits to our communities¨.
A river-rafting excursion
and familiarization tour on the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia,
currently Atlantic Canada’s top adventure tidal river, is
also planned for early October. Invitations will soon go out to
various community leaders, decision makers and tourism operators
in the Greater Moncton region to join the tour and learn more
about the amazing recreational potential offered by tidal rivers.
All interested in taking
part in Sunday’s river run are invited to meet at the old
public wharf located behind the Running Room on east Main St.
Moncton at 11:30 am. The canoes and kayaks will leave shortly
after the tidal bore and will ride the powerful current up to
the old Riverview Fire hall on the riverfront, then return to
Moncton with the receding tide. This downtown river adventure
is expected to take approximately 3 hours. A limited number of
canoes are available for free, please reserve ahead of time by
calling the Riverkeeper office (388-5337).
