NEWS RELEASE
Riverfront activities planned for Earth Day
12-km bike “Tour for the River” to be held on April 22nd

(Moncton – April 12, 2006) – Moncton’s Riverfront Park, Greater Moncton’s riverfront trail system and the “future look” of the Petitcodiac River will be celebrated this coming April 22nd to coincide with Earth Day.

Among the day’s featured activities will be a 12-km bike “Tour for the River” leaving Moncton’s Riverfront Park, (near the Celtic Cross) at 12:30 p.m. Organisers of the event are asking all those interested in joining the tour to arrive at the park around noon. Cyclists will make their way along Moncton’s riverfront trail, cross the River at the causeway to Riverview, return via the new Gunningsville Bridge and end near the “Bend of the River” in Dieppe. Along the way, participants will be able to view the “future look” of the Petitcodiac River, a large outdoor temporary art installation designed to help people see what the River will look like in 2020, explains Riverkeeper Daniel LeBlanc. “We’re hoping people will be able to view this installation from either the Dieppe, Moncton or Riverview’s riverfront trail system”.

Those that are unable to join the midday bike tour are nevertheless invited to bring their lunches and make their way to Moncton’s Riverfront Park between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Saturday April 22nd, where music will be provided by DJ Textyle and DJ Bu’da. The public is also encouraged to walk, run or bike the riverfront trail system throughout Earth Day weekend to view the installation, and are invited to bring a garbage bag with them to collect any refuse that they see along their way. In the event of rain or snow, the activities will take place on Sunday, April 23rd, same time, same place.Four environmental organizations from our community, Petitcodiac Riverkeeper, SOS Eau Water Sankwan, Symbiose and Allergy Health Association – NB have joined together to organize these activities. Earth Day is a world wide annual event to celebrate the earth and to renew our community’s commitment to building a safer, healthier and cleaner planet for all.
