Stream Clean ups Scheduled for September 21st and 28th

(Moncton - September 18, 2002) - Dozens of volunteers will head to the streams of the Petitcodiac River watershed on September 21st and 28th in order to take part in the third annual Fall stream clean up event sponsored by the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper and funded by the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund. September 21st is the official date of the International Coastal clean up, where participants from 77 countries removed over 12.58 million pounds of debris from coastal areas last year!

« North Branch Halls Creek and Gorge Brook in Moncton, Grindstone Creek in Dieppe and Breau Creek in Memramcook are at least four of the streams that will be thoroughly sweeped in order to rid them of all the garbage that we can find », said Daniel LeBlanc, Petitcodiac Riverkeeper. The Riverkeeper obtained $11 000 from the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund this year in order to organize the clean-up event.

Every year, the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper organises groups of volunteers to clean-up the rivers and brooks of the watershed, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. In the past two years, over 200 volunteers have taken part, removing over 15 tons of debris while working on 12 different streams located in Berry's Mills, Dieppe, Riverview, Memramcook, Moncton and Petitcodiac. The debris has included everything from discarded coffee cups to refrigerators and used automobiles!

Anyone interested in taking part in the clean-up is asked to contact the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper at 388-5337. Meeting points for the Saturday 21st clean up at 9:00 a.m. are at the extreme western end of the Gladstone Quarry located at 1050 McLaughlin Road (North Branch Halls Creek) and at the Southeastern entrance to Mapleton Park on Mapleton Road (West Branch Halls Creek).

Meeting points for the Saturday 28th clean up at 9:00 a.m. are at the Esso Station, corner of Dover Road and Amirault Street in Dieppe (Grindstone Creek), at Dexter's Quarry on Gorge Road, just north of Ammon Road (Gorge Brook) and at the Lourdes church in Memramcook (Breau Creek).

As in previous years, an appreciation lunch will be served to volunteers following the clean up and the event will take place rain or shine.
