Arts community wins the 2004 Petitcodiac River Award

(Moncton – January 27, 2004) – The arts community has won the 2004 Petitcodiac River Award, an honour presented yearly by the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper to recognize those that have made a significant contribution towards protecting the Petitcodiac River ecosystem.

The arts community as a whole, working in the fields of visual arts, cinema, dance, literature, music and theatre was selected by the Riverkeeper as the recipient of the award for 2004 for its exemplary generosity and longstanding commitment to the cause of restoring free-flow to the Petitcodiac River.

In announcing the award, Petitcodiac Riverkeeper Daniel LeBlanc pointed out that the arts community in the region, consisting of over a hundred artists, had played a crucial role in promoting the rich cultural heritage of the river at the regional and national levels. Many members of the arts community have also generously supported Petitcodiac Riverkeeper’s financial campaigns over the years, a gesture that has been of great assistance to the cause.

“Whether it’s with the French music hit Petitcodiac (Zéro degré celcius/Zachary Richard), the Symposium d’art actuel organised during the Francophonie Summit in 1999, the CD compilation Pet-Kout-Koy-Ek, the dance ceremonies or the dozens of art works created by artists of the region to promote the cause, the arts community has always been there when it comes to helping the Petitcodiac River,” noted Daniel LeBlanc.

This is the third year that the Riverkeeper presents the Petitcodiac Award. L’École Amirault in Dieppe won the award in 2002, while Environment Canada’s Office of Enforcement for the Atlantic Region, located in Halifax, won the award in 2003. A ceremony to present the award to the arts community will be take place in the coming weeks.

On Monday, Riverkeeper will unveil the list of the 10 worst pollution sources of the Petitcodiac River ecosystem in 2004.
