A
project sponsored by the Habitat Stewardship Program for Species
at Risk, 2001 - 2003 (Environment Canada - Atlantic
Region)
Consulting
with Experts
Consulting with experts and assembling
the right team from the start of the project is key to the success
of the project. Objective scientific guidelines are required to
determine the specific procedures and consequences for removing
a dam before the decision for removal is finalized.
Engineers, hydrologists, geologists,
fluvial geomorphologists, fisheries biologists and economists
team-up to develop a plan that will take into account the technical
issues relevant to dam removal such as:
Structure evaluation and deconstruction
techniques
Stream hydrology characteristics and
erosion impacts
Sediment assessment, removal and transport potential downstream
Habitat assessment for fish, wildlife and other aquatic organisms.
